Kit, a lowland gorilla, was 38 and one of the stars of the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston, first zoo I ever went to, probably in those early years lost to memory. I’m now of two minds about zoos but it’s complicated. Also complicated is the Chet and Bernie chapter I’m working on today – we seem to have C&B entering a desert bar where the dramatis personae are two older women who came on horseback, more than two biker gang members, and a chubby barkeep who may or may not know something. In addition – despite a current temp of 30 and gale warnings I seem to be getting ready for a bike ride. Therefore Phriday Photos will not appear today. M. Laiuppa has sent a really interesting post which I’ll make into a two-parter starting next Friday. Meanwhile, anyone who wants can send in a photo and blurb about anything.

Sounds like a very interesting chapter.
Good day to all,
Greetings!
Funny how the mind works (mine, at least). As soon as I saw Kitombe’s picture, I thought of Rodin’s “The Thinker.” RIP Kit.
From the sound of it, this chapter sounds like it is going to be a doozy! :^)
Enjoy your ride Spence…Bundle up!
Create a good day!
Kitombe was a handsome gorilla. RIP Kit!
Hmmm. I’m thinking that one of the inspirations for setting the C&B books in Arizona is living through a winter in New England. Perhaps writing about a warm place in the middle of a cold, snowy Winter has the effect of warming the brain if not the body?
Yes, I did write quite the novella this week. I’m really not much of a writer. Perhaps my early educational experiences have made “creative writing” a chore. But the one thing that “inspires” me is talking about my dogs. considering Freyja is the only dog I did not have from puppyhood and the fact the only reason I have her is THIS blog was a contributing factor. Also that the only reason she is alive is this blog. Had we not had that discussion that day and I had not started web surfing inspired by that discussion and found her, she would have suffered the fate of so many other dogs. Two strikes and space needed.
I’ve been a fan of our local humane society since taking Diana there as a puppy and learning more about them. If Freyja had been at SDHumane she would have been adopted, her people educated about her breed, needs and being patient, training offered and never at the mercy of lack of space. Likely would have ended up a foster fail because she is so sweet.
Walk for the Animals will be this coming May 3. I know many support us. Right now we are doing the AKC Turkey Trot which is just a fitness thing with the AKC. They have added a Spring Scurry. Anyone can participate wherever they are. It’s free. Just sign up with te AKC and take your dog for a walk. Diana, Freyja and I do laps at the dog park.
Today is Saint Nicholas day.
“Nicholas of Myra and was a bishop in 4th century Greece. He was known for selling off his own items and then giving the money to the poor. He would commonly leave coins in people’s shoes and dedicated his entire life to serving people who were sick and suffering. ”
He died December 6, A.D. 343. In some ways the life of Saint Francis mirrors that of Nicholas as both were born to wealthy parents and gave away everything they owned to the poor.
It was in the Netherlands that Saint Nicolas transformed into Sinterklass. They introduced the holiday to North America in the 1820s.
My Dad said that when they were young they would put out their shoes on the eve of Epiphany (Jan 6) and get socks and some nuts and fruit. His parents were immigrants from Sicily.
I should have mentioned that today is also National Pawnbroker’s day, pawnbrokers and Bernie’s watch being a recurring theme in the C&B books.
