Presidents Day

Washington’s Birthday! Actually not till the 22nd (I preferred when Lincoln and Washington had their own separate holidays) but today’s when we recognize it. His like doesn’t come around often. Among many other attributes, he always had dogs in his life, and is credited with the development of the American foxhound. (He wanted something speedier for his fox hunts.) He also had a flair for naming them – for example, Sweet Lips, Venus, Trulove, Taster, Tippler, Drunkard and Madame Moose.

  1. Greetings!

I, too, preferred when we celebrated Lincoln’s and Washington’s birthdays on their actual birthdays.

    Happy birthday to both presidents!

    Good day to all!

  2. On the 22nd according to the old calendar or new calendar? Wasn’t there an adjustment in switching to Gregorian or compensating for it being slightly out of whack over the centuries because a year isn’t exactly 365 days or even with the occasional leap day thrown in? Played wonky with those born before the adjustment.

    Aha! Found it.

“Washington was born Feb. 22, 1732, on Popes Creek Plantation near the Potomac River in Virginia. Technically, though, he was born Feb. 11 under the ancient Julian calendar, which was still in use for the first 20 years of his life.”

So we really should be celebrating on February 11 and with Lincoln’s birthday on the 12th if you’re going to combine them, that’s when you should do it.
