I’m a mystery writer so I have a special interest in real crimes. Re the murder of the UnitedHealthCare CEO in midtown Manhattan: the killer was waiting for the victim outside his hotel shortly after 6 AM. How did he know the man would be coming outside?

How indeed. And how did he know at exactly what time the CEO would be coming to the hotel. When I worked at Warner Bros., the office was right down the block from that Hilton, so I am very familiar with that area. An intriguing and tragic situation.

The CEO was heading to a shareholder’s meeting. If the hitman knew the destination and time and from which direction the CEO would be coming, he just had to pick his spot and wait. If he did prior research he would know if the guy walked, took a cab, had a bodyguard, etc.
Could be he’s stalked him to analyze his routine. Could be he waited all night. There is speculation this was a professional hit, although I think if it was he wouldn’t have been careless enough to leave as much evidence as he did. Myself? I think it was personal and I think he’s very smart and this has been planned for quite some time and the actual plan was meticulous, not spur of the moment. This was cold blooded. I understand the gun jammed and he was calm enough to clear it and continue shooting. The casings were marked with the title of a book on the abuses of the health insurance industry: Delay, Deny, Defend, Depose. (I think Defend was the one that jammed.) And sorry to say but the more I learn about the CEO and United Health Care, the less empathy I have for the victim. (I am not alone. The online reactions are quite dark and I have to admit creative and amusing.) Call it the Felon-Effect. We have been desensitized by 8 years of whining from an entitled, privileged, extremely wealthy convicted felon with an obvious mental problem and a weaponized political party who have just been given four more years of power and I for one am very tired. To me this is a danger sign of a society that may react as the French did in 1789. It won’t take ten years, nor be as indiscriminate, nor as lethal. I do suspect that in the next four years those that were callous regarding Sandy Hook and ALL of the other similar incidents are going to do a quick 180 on the very laws they fought so hard to prevent because now they are the targets.
Sorry to be so political but I saw this coming when the Supreme Court took control of an election and gave it to the loser in 2000, followed soon by the Patriot Act. We had a temporary reprieve but I am not the only one that saw shades of 1933 in 2016. Now I fear we are going back further to France in 1789.
Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
