Doo-Dah*

There’s fun to be had in this business. For example, on Tuesday I did an event in a store I’d never been to – Towne Center Books in Pleasanton CA – and it turned out to be a gem. Many thanks to all who came and to Suzanne Morrone for this photo. Today (Wed.) I’ll be at Watermark Books & Cafe- a store I know and am very fond of – in Wichita. 6 PM CT.

*Doo-Dah – a nickname for Wichita. Why? I have no idea.

  1. Think they could find you a smaller table?

Wow, that is a lot of traveling. Arizona on Monday night, California Tuesday afternoon and Kansas Wednesday evening. I hope Thursday you’ll be back in your own bed resting up for the next set.

  2. Oh, and:

“Wichita is affectionately referred to as “Doo-Dah”, though the origins of this nickname are pretty unclear. Younger Wichitans suspect the name began with older generations, while some members of older generations have attributed the use of the name primarily to younger Wichitans.

Some suggest that the name “Doo-Dah” was given to Wichita in the 1950s as a way to counter the hype that surrounded the city as a result of it’s other nickname, the “Air Capital of the World”. According to an article in the Topeka Capital Journal, a California historian traced the name back to a group of local college students in the 1920s.

Today, Urban Dictionary defines Doo-Dah as:

“Another nickname for Wichita, KS. Origins unknown, but perhaps it references the laid-back, whimsical attitude felt by some visitors to the city.””

Apparently it has nothing to do with Camptown Races, which was my first thought.

  3. Today is National Cherry Turnover day. Something I should have read in advance since I went grocery shopping yesterday. Not going out today just for a turnover. Now I have nothing against cherry turnovers. I like cherries. I make a great cherry pie and I like them on my sundaes. But the weather is nice today and for the next five days and I’m going to take advantage of it by not going anywhere. I have plenty to do. There is nothing coming up that inspires me to go out to the store again so we shall see what inspires starting in September.

The crab soup was meh. It was a bit too fishy for my taste. Could be because I used fish stock instead of chicken, beef or vegetable. If I ever made that recipe again I would use Better than Bouillon vegetable and make only half the recipe. Vons sells crab meat in 8 oz containers and that would make a half. As is I have at least three more servings in the refrigerator. I am going to try it cold today to see if it is any better. The dogs may end up getting the last two portions. They are going to LOVE it. Especially Freyja who, as a Husky, seems to be quite partial to fish. Diana seems quite partial to anything, the more the better.

  4. I like Diana’s thinking. Whoever thought portion control was a good idea. That is perhaps why the Big in BigTiny fits me better than the Tiny.

Mom has book 1 of the Mercy Carr series on her Kindle app but it has not been read. Thank you, WTAFP, for the reminder. It has moved up the “to be read” list.

Wose!! Are you going to do a calendar for 2025? If so, should we email you possible pics to use? It’s a challenge for you since losing some of our core people with the blog format change. And not being able to post pictures here.
