Beginnings

Sunday is when we do beginnings, taking a look at the start of a Peter Abrahams novel, including those written under the Spencer Quinn moniker™. (Moniker’s a very strange word we’ve taken the liberty of trademarking piratically.) Since tennis has been cropping up here recently let’s take a look at the beginning of chapter 2 of Mrs. Plansky’s Revenge, where Mrs. P makes her first appearance:

Something amazing happened on Court #2 of the New Sunshine Golf and Tennis Club just before lunchtime on the day after New Year’s, although it was amazing to only one person, namely Loretta Plansky, a seventy-one year old widow of solid build and the only female player in the whole club with a one-handed backhand.

(Note: I too have one-handed backhand. Not uncommon for men, but you rarely see a woman with a one-handed backhand at any level.)

  1. Greetings!

If I drank coffee on a more regular basis, I would be lifting my cup to Mrs. Plansky in salute to her one-handed backhand, and also in salute to National Coffee Day.

Grizz and I are going to see “One Hand Clapping” the Paul McCartney and Wings documentary this afternoon.

Just a reminder, September 30th is the final day for orders for the 2025 Plunder On! calendar.

    Good Sunday to all!

  2. I’m such a Loretta fan!
You all probably know that I am an organization freak. That said, a while back, I was trying to understand the dynamics of this fantastic blog. I decided to create a spreadsheet and plug in information as it became available, to help in that regard. The first big boost came from Wose’s 2024 Calendar. Next was the cookbook WTAFP sent. Lately, ML and I have been sharing notes. Now, if any of you would like a copy of this Plunderer’s list, just send me an email to: mrscompton@aol.com. One caveat: any information should stay with seasoned blog members only. If you wish, send any additions and corrections, and I will update. Also, if you wish, I will delete anything you don’t want shared. Thanks in advance, C&B fans. This blog is simply amazing and I am so grateful for it.

  3. Bluecat/Bobcat, I think I understand you changed your handle to be able to log in here. Is the reference to ‘bridge’ meaning both cats have passed over the Rainbow Bridge? If so, I am so sorry!

  5. Hi Reba. We’ve been without pets here at home for quite a while but enjoy our grand cats and dogs and horse. Always fun to give them gifts, especially loud squeaky toys. The horse gets apples and carrots.

Sending you an email…glad you found the Plunderers.

  6. I can’t believe I am almost as old as Mrs Plansky. Hadn’t thought about it until reading this.

Don’t play tennis though. Or golf. And I have both of my original hips and plan to keep them.
