Santa En Route

Christmas Eve Day! The greater joy can be in the anticipation, as Keats pointed out: “Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter.” I would say this isn’t true for Chet (canine narrator of the #ChetandBernie #mystery series, the joy being equal in his case.

  1. We had heavy fog last night after midnight and it’s damp this morning. It’s currently 58 and what I call a heavy dew for the next half hour which is basically a useless very light rain that doesn’t do anything to water the plants.

    Not working outside today.

It’s National Eggnog Day and I have a carton in the refrigerator so i will be partaking of that today, finishing off the Welsh Rarebit for lunch and having a BLT for dinner. I’ve got no prep for tomorrow except for thawing and then cooking the little boneless turkey breast I bought. Everything else except the appetizer is pre-made, even the mashed potatoes thanks to the deli section at my local store. I will be doctoring them a bit with butter and milk. I even managed to find brown and serve rolls! Store brand but better than having to make them from scratch. The appetizer will be easy as I’ll only have to do a little chopping:

    Pomegranate seeds
    red onion – finely chopped
jalapeño – gutted, cleaned and finely chopped
    cilantro – finely chopped
    lime juice
    combine all of above

    cream cheese
    Milton’s original whole grain crackers.

Spread cream cheese on cracker, top with pomegranate salsa.

Tomorrow I plan to basically nibble all day with a major nibble of the turkey dinner in the middle somewhere, then more nibbling for the rest of the day. I kept some of the best of the Christmas cookies so I will be able to enjoy the fruits of my labor too. Baking is done. Tomorrow back to the fence.

Best of all, I will have leftover turkey. I like turkey even better than chicken. I’ll be doing sandwiches and am going to try my hand at a turkey pot pie again. Still haven’t quite got the gravy to filling ratio correct but I’m working on it.

May everyone enjoy their holidays in whatever way pleases them best and don’t forget to kiss your furry companions on the nose from me. (Tell Franklin it is from Freyja.)

  2. It looks like WTAFP will get us on the Nice list this year for services rendered in caring for our Lady’s father. We still harnessed up to help Santa deliver gifts as community service for misdeeds that proceeded Coach’s cancer diagnosis.

  3. Thieves. Got you covered, no worries. And to all, a merry Christmas Eve. We are watching one of our favorite Christmas movies just now — A Dig Named Christmas. Franklin is fully engrossed.

    1. I’ll bet he’d also love “A Dog Named Christmas.” 😉

One of my favorites is pretty obscure. “We’re No Angels” with Humphrey Boghart, Peter Ustinov, Aldo Rey, Leo G. Carroll and Basil Rathbone. I specify the actors not to confuse it with the abomination they remade using the same title but bearing no similarity at all with the original which is delightful. PRIME has it to rent or buy.

Sometimes TCM broadcasts it this time of year if you have cable.

Unfortunately, no dogs to speak of. There is a lovely snake named Adolphe, unseen.

  4. ML — Thanks, that’s what happens when you type too fast.

As to Christmas movies, a lot to choose from, although our favorite is probably Christmas in Connecticut (accompanied on DVD by “Star in the Night,” a wonderful short film that won an Oscar in 1945). Closely followed by White Christmas, Miracle on 34th Street, It’s A Wonderful Life, and The BIshop’s Wife. And further followed by the Alistair Sim version of A Christmas Carol.

    1. I’ve seen A Dog Named Christmas. (Music by Jeff Beal, one of my favorite movie/tv composers.) I also like The 12 Dogs of Christmas. The only thing I find unbelievable is who wouldn’t adopt a Golden Retriever?

Your list is pretty much my list too except for It’s a Wonderful Life. It makes me angry because Mr Potter got away with it and was never exposed, punished, confessed or took responsibility in any way. I just can’t watch it any more.

There are several versions of A Christmas Carol I am partial to as all have some strengths. I’ll pretty much watch any version of it. I include an episode from Black Adder. For Miracle on 34th St it would be with the young Natalie Wood and for the Bishop’s Wife obviously the Cary Grant/David Niven. (The remake is the one movie by Denzel Washington I didn’t care for.)

Add Holiday Inn as there is a Christmas section featuring White Christmas.

I have added two contemporary (relatively) movies to my list, The Holiday (Jack Black, Cameron Diaz) and The Last Holiday (Queen Latifah). Barely making the list would be Love Actually.
