Santa 365

“There’s no Santa Claus,” Charlie said.
“Who told you that?” said Bernie.
“Esmé.”
“Who’s Esmé?”
“At school.”
“Well,” said Bernie, “everyone has their own opinion.”
“It’s not an opinion, Dad,” said Charlie. “It’s a scientific fact.”
“Oh?”
“From a scientist.”
“Any scientist in particular?”
“Groucho Marx.”
“Esmé told you that?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Know much about Groucho Marx?”
Charlie shrugged his skinny little shoulders. “He was a scientist and he said there ain’t no Santa Claus.”
“What do Esmé’s parents do?”
“Drive her to school. Pick her up.”
“I meant for a living.”
“Like you’re a private eye?”
“Yeah. Like that.”
“I don’t think they’re private eyes,” Charlie said.
“Why not?”
“They’re rich.”

  1. Greetings!

This excerpt always makes me laugh, and I have always loved the cover of “Santa 365.” :^)

It is 9 degrees in this neck of the woods.

    Create a good day!

  2. Wose. It’s not quite that cold here, but close. It was 17 this morning, but that did not prevent us from having a good game of morning fetch and even tending to Miss Abby.

  3. I wonder if Groucho Marx ever won a Nobel Prize….
WTAFP & ML, little Jilly was just recently spayed at age 4. I waited until she had several seasons for the reasons you cited. Our first dog, Taffy, was not spayed until she developed Pyometra and had to have an emergency hysterectomy. She did develop breast cancer and had to have mastectomies on all her ‘faucets’. Because of those problems, we did have our second dog, Taffy, spayed. She always battled excess weight. So. Pros and cons. Hard to know the best path. Same with homemade food. The ID Humane Society vet, at Jilly’s annual check up last week, says she is a bit too ‘fluffy’. *sigh*. Try as we may to keep them healthy, it is a full time job!

    1. I did a lot of research before developing a recipe but have yet to run it by my vet to make sure it is healthy.

For instance some recipes call for brown rice. Oatmeal would be better. Some call for spinach. Kale is a better alternative. Green beans rather than the frozen peas most call for. I do use sweet potatoes. I also add liver, bone meal, sardines and flax seed oil, flax meal, kelp and other fruits and vegetables. I can usually get ground lean beef for about $5 a pound. If I use lean turkey or chicken I have to add more organ meat. I use a pressure cooker and it takes around 2-3 hours to cook it up as I do the vegetables and meats separately, plus there is the mixing. I use silicone portioned freezer containers from Amazon so they are in 2 cup, 1 cup and even 1/2 cup portions so already pre-measured. There is a site on the internet (for people actually) that you can put in your recipe and it will give you calories and nutrients. Different sites give you how many calories your dog should consume a day but I have gotten different calculations from them. All of them combined give me daily portions for Diana and Freyja but as I said, expensive. Full home made cost me $300 for a month. Dr Pol’s kibble cost me about $100 for the same month. I’m picky about the kibble too and order theirs from Chewy as my local PetCo and PetSmart do not stock it. Dr Pol comes in chicken based and ocean based and I alternate with them each year so they don’t develop food allergies.

This Christmas they are getting some unsalted beef broth on their kibble, plus I have a few cans of tuna as toppers for Christmas and New Year’s. I’ve also got some beef lung treats.

My parent’s dog, Candy, always battled her weight. Only we called her “poofy”, from those Ice Age movies.

  4. It’s National Pfeffernüsse day. I made mine last week. Today I finished up a second recipe of Lebkuchen, different one than the last time. I’m in the middle of Panettone now and will be trying my hand at Frankfurter Breten later with some left over marzipan.

That completes the Christmas baking, at least for others. I am going to make some dinner rolls to go with my Christmas dinner as there doesn’t seem to be one package of brown n serve rolls in the stores anymore. Not even for ready money.
